Introduction to the AC Library Resource List Builder

The AC Library Resource List Builder allows faculty to create lists of Library digital resources from within their Brightspace profile. Students can then access these readings from within the course on Brightspace.

AC Library Resource List Builder Help

Using the Library Resource List Builder, you can create lists of resources for your course. You can create collections for each week of the course, or create a list of useful readings for an assignment.


How to create a new list

  1. Open a module from your course menu.
  2. Click Existing Activities and from the drop-down menu select External Learning Tools.
  3. From the drop-down menu labelled ‘Add’, select External Tool.
  4. Select AC Library Resource List Builder from the list of tools. The link to your new list appears in the module with the default name and description.

How to change the list name and description

  1. Click the down arrow beside the existing title and select Edit Properties In-place.
  2. Click on the list title and type a name for your list into the text box that appears.
  3. Click outside the textbox to save the title.
  4. Click on the description to open the description text entry box and enter a description for the list.
  5. Click Update.

Once you have created a reading list you can add items to it.

How to add Library resources to a resource list

  1. Click on a list in Brightspace to open the Resource List Builder.
  2. Enter your search terms into the Basic Search to view your results.
  3. Filter your results using the limiters along the left side of the page.
  4. When you have found a resource that you want to add, click Add to Reading List.
  5. View your list under See Current Reading List.

In addition to adding resources from the library to your resource list in Brightspace, using the AC Library Resource List Builder, you can add resources from the web.

How to add web resources

  1. Open your resource list from Brightspace.
  2. Click See Current Reading List to view the list.
  3. Click Add Web Resource to open the text entry box.
  4. Enter the URL of a webpage that you want to include in the resource list. typing a url into the text box and clicking add.
  5. Enter a title for the resource and click Add to Reading List. The web resource will appear in your list, along with any Library resources that you have added.

TIP: you can use the ‘Add Web Resources’ function to add Library databases or Subject Guides to your list.

You can add instructions to a reading list in the AC Library Resource List Builder.

How to add instructions

  1. Open your resource list from Brightspace.
  2. Click See Current Reading List to view the list.
  3. Click Add Text or Instructions to expand the widget.
  4. Type your instructions into the text box. typing instructions into the text box and clicking add to reading list.
  5. Click Add to Reading List. Your instructions will now appear in your reading list.

Note: Instructions and resources appear in the list in alphabetical order. To reorder your list so that your instructions appear on top, see Changing the sort order of a resource list.

You can add notes to resources in a list in the Library Resource List Builder.

How to add a note

  1. Open your resource list from Brightspace.
  2. Click See Current Reading List to view the list.
  3. Locate the list item to which you want to add the note. In the entry for the resource, click Add Notes. This will reveal the notes text box. typing a note into the text box and clicking add note.
  4. Type your note into the text box and click Save Notes. Your note will appear with the resource entry in your list.

Resources that have been added to a resource list will appear in alphabetical order. If you want them to appear in a different order, you can change the sort order manually.

To change the sort order of resources

  1. Open your resource list from Brightspace.
  2. Click See Current Reading List to view the list. By default, all items in the list will appear with a sort order of 1.
  3. Locate the item that should appear first in the list.
  4. Click and hold on the box for this result. Drag the result to the top of the reading list. clicking private to change it to public
  5. Repeat this process with the remaining list items, so that each item is in the order that you prefer.

The AC Library Resource List Builder allows you to make your resource lists available for other faculty members to view and import.

  1. Open your resource list.
  2. Verify that the list is set to Public.
  3. If the list is private, click Private. This will toggle the list to Public and faculty members will be able to view and import your list.clicking private to change it to public.

Previewing your list in Brightspace

Students will only see the Resource List without any search box. You cannot see the student view of the Resource List by previewing your Brightspace course using the “View as Learner” function. You must follow the instructions below.

  1. In the course on Brightspace, click Tools > Classlist > Add Participants > Add existing users.
  2. Search for Test Student and add it with the role of TestStudent.
  3. Click on the arrow beside the Test Student name and select Impersonate. You will see the course as a student.
  4. Click on a Resource List in the course to open it as a student.

Note: Remove the Test Student from your course when done, otherwise other instructors using Test Student will be able to see your course as a learner.
